“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.” Matthew 5:4
The Healing Hearts Ministry evolved at Mary, Star of the Sea Church, on July 11, 2015. Known as the Bereavement Ministry in most instances, MSOS chose to rename its outreach program as “Healing Hearts.” In the Order of Christian Funerals, the Church asks that the entire community, priests and laity, be involved in ministering to the family of the deceased. Healing Hearts, an outreach program for members of our Parish Community and beyond, minister to those who are experiencing personal loss through death, or near death of a loved one. This group was formed to provide comfort, support and encouragement as well as educational and social opportunities for persons who share the same life crisis. Trained volunteers and participants offer welcoming embrace to those who share the same difficult challenges. This ministry gives an initiation to a new outlook, renewed determination and a deeper trust in God’s power and presence.
“Now may the God of peace make you holy in every way, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless until that day when our Lord Jesus Christ comes again.” 1 Thessalonians 5:23

This ministry works together on the maintenance and improvement of church facilities and surroundings, to provide an environment of peace and quiet. The Gospel is expressed through the designs and development of banners and other decorative creations to enhance observance of the various church seasons. Particular emphasis is placed on the special seasons of Advent, Christmas, Lent, Holy Week and Easter, as well as Ordinary Time and other parish Liturgical Celebrations.
“Whoever welcomes this little child in my name, welcomes me.” Luke 9:48
The Mothers and Babies Project is a Pro-Life ministry which supports and encourages mothers who are experiencing an unplanned pregnancy, and who have little resources. Throughout the year, we collect donations for the Mary Jane Home and the Pearson Pregnancy Center. There women are provided with free pregnancy testing, counseling, shelter, baby necessities, as well as emotional support to give their babies life.
“Amen I say to you, whenever you did this for one of these, the least of my brothers, you did it for me.” Matthew 25:40
Providing for the homeless in our community is the focus of our parishioners in giving their time, talent and treasures. Dinner is provided to people at the Next Step Shelter on the first Sunday of every month. Extra meals are prepared, packaged and delivered to the encampment community located around the corner from the Shelter. Blood pressure monitors were donated to offer the adults free blood pressure checks. MSOS teens provide entertainment, games, and reading time with the little children. During the holidays, the ministry prepares and serves a Thanksgiving morning feast. At Christmas, we joyfully decorate the shelter with Christmas lights while the MSOS teens help the children decorate the Christmas tree at the shelter. Every child receives a gift and a free photo taken with Santa. The choir, youth and Chinese Catholic Ministry come together during the holiday to bring Christmas joy by Christmas caroling at the shelter. Clothing and toys are donated and collected to be given out at the shelter.
Our Homeless Ministry also joins with Holy Trinity Homeless Ministry to prepare and serve breakfast to the homeless in Waikiki on Saturday mornings. Coming together with Habitat to help build homes, School Supply Drives for Homeless Children, Aloha Clean Water Project, distributing Rosary gifts and prayer cards, are some of our projects.

“Upon disembarking Jesus saw a vast crowd. He pitied them for they were like sheep without a shepherd, and he began to teach them at great length. It was now getting late and his disciples came to him with a suggestion: “This is a deserted place and it is already late. Why do you not dismiss them so they can go to the crossroads and villages around here and buy themselves something to eat?” “You give them something to eat,” Jesus replied.” Mark 6:34-37
The Social Activities Ministry is a ministry of hospitality. The social activities at Mary, Star of the Sea help build community. It is the committee’s responsibility to encourage parishioners to help organize various activities such as the Holy Thursday Soup Supper, Blessed Virgin Mary’s Birthday celebration, breakfasts after the Misa de Gallo Masses, the Annual Parish Christmas Party, and other celebrations.
“They shall still bring forth fruits in old age; they shall be substantial and flourishing.” Psalm 92:14
This ministry builds camaraderie through helpful friendships and activities that stimulate the mind and body with spirit. We do activities that promote the common good by making welcoming lei for the church masses, supporting a charitable donation to our church with available funds, and having a fundraiser once a year. We meet every Monday at 9:00 am to 12:00 noon in the Parish Hall on the second floor, except on holidays.
“Love your fellow Christians always. Do not neglect to show your hospitality.”
Hebrews 13:1-3
How do we welcome new parishioners? “I was a stranger and you welcomed me.” Matthew 25:35. The Welcoming Ministry is a group of parish members dedicated to ensuring a welcome to all new members of the parish family. The work for the Welcoming Ministry provides a great deal of satisfaction by bringing a feeling of welcome to our new members of the Mary, Star of the Sea Parish Family. Anyone who loves to greet newcomers and extend the Aloha Spirit to help them feel at home by being a point of contact for any of their questions regarding the community is welcomed. All you need is a smile and have the love of our faith with a desire to pass it on is all that is needed. Training will be provided. Arrive 1/2 hour before Mass to greet arrivals at the entrance with a bulletin.
